With all the current nuclear rhetoric and threats here’s a very interesting story. The guy who once saved the world died a few months ago with no one proudly celebrating his life. He is a former Soviet military officer. His name is Stanislav Petrov. Stanislav passed away in May. Three decades ago he was on duty when the then Soviet Union’s early-warning system detected an incoming nuclear missile strike from the US. The protocol was for the Soviet military to fire nuclear missiles at the US in response, but he dismissed them as a false alarm and refused to report the alert to his superiors.
