John Lennon at 80

Sean Lennon is set to sit down with some of father John Lennon’s friends and collaborators next month for a special BBC Radio 2 show to celebrate what would have been John’s 80^th birthday (his birthday would have been October 9^th). Those talking to Sean include John’s Beatles bandmate Paul McCartney, Sean’s godfather Elton John, and his half-brother Julian Lennon.In the conversation, McCartney recalls meeting John for the first time, sharing, “I look back on it now like a fan,” adding, “how lucky was I to meet this strange teddy boy off the bus, who played music like I did and we get together and boy, we complemented each other!”McCartney also talks about writing songs with John, noting “There were a few songs that weren’t very good,” and even picks up his guitar to play the previously unheard track “Just Fun,” which they wrote when thy were first starting out.

Paul also shares that John had insecurities and used his humor as a “shield” to protect himself. “Wait a minute, there’s this guy ‘John Lennon’ who’s like a genius, clever, witty, confident, and everything why would he have insecurities?,” McCartney asks. “Because we’re all fragile beings.”

“John Lennon at 80” will air October 3^rd and 4^th on BBC Radio 2, and then will later be available for streaming.
