More than 18,000 people came out to see Bruce Springsteen at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center on Monday. According to the venue, that sets a new record. “Tonight this is going to be our last official performance of ‘The River’ from start to finish. We’re going to open up our set list overseas,” Springsteen told the crowd. “We’ve had a great time performing this record for all of you. We hope you have enjoyed it in the United States. So let’s go down to the River one more time and see what we find.” There were at least two people of note at the show that night. New Jersey Governor Chris Christie was seen rocking out in the crowd. A 10-year-old girl also made her presence known by holding a sign that said “I’ve been Blinded by the Light! (I’m 10 years old and I know all the words. Try me!)” The Boss did just that and brought her on stage. She wasn’t kidding. “That’s impressive,” Springsteen joked. “I don’t even know the words.” Check out fan shot footage of her performance.
Add Coldplay’s Chris Martin to the list of artists who paid tribute to Prince following his death last week. The UK rocker performed a three-song set at the “Chords 2 Cure” benefit in Santa Monica, which raises money for pediatric cancer, and when he was done he treated the audience to a cover of Prince’s “Raspberry Beret.” Making the tribute all the more special, Martin performed the tune with a band of eighth graders who go by the name A-Side.
The Frank Zappa vault is opening once again. Four more titles from the rocker are set to be reissued. The re-released triple-disc, “Lumpy Money Project/Object,” will include alternate takes and outtakes, along with Zappa interviews. The physical copy also comes with a book containing liner notes penned by critic David Fricke and Zappa’s widow Gail. The digitial version marks the first time the album will be available to download. Also set to be reissued are “Road Tapes, Venue #1,” recorded in 1968 in Vancouver, “Road Tapes, Venue #2,” from his Helsinki show in 1973 and “Road Tapes, Venue #3,” recorded in Minneapolis in 1970. All three of those albums feature the Mothers of Invention lineup that included Flo & Eddie, George Duke, Ian Underwood, Aynsley Dunbar and Jeff Simmons. All of these releases will hits stores on May 27th, but you can preorder them now.
Alice Cooper never met Prince, yet they had an ongoing battle over a woman: Orianthi. ( The kickass guitarist who was supposed tour with Michael Jackson ) But it was strictly business. Cooper says Prince was constantly trying to steal Orianthi away from Cooper’s band. Cooper says every time he’d talk to Orianthi, she was on the phone, saying, “It’s Prince again.” Cooper says he knew Prince liked to have pretty girls in his band but he’d jokingly tell Orianthi to tell Prince she was with Cooper for the next year.
A top Minnesota probate lawyer says if pop idol Prince left no will — resolving his estate could get very complicated. The musician’s sister, Tyka Nelson, filed court documents saying she knows of no will and wants the court to appoint a corporate trust company to oversee his estate. Nelson is Prince’s only full sibling.
Imprisoned legendary music producer Phil Spector wants a divorce. A lawyer for Rachelle Spector says the divorce filing is heartbreaking for her. The Spectors met at a Hollywood restaurant in 2003, shortly after he was arrested in the shooting death of Lana Clarkson. The producer was later convicted of killing Clarkson and is serving a sentence of 19 years to life.
